Two open trials and a double blind comparative investigation indicate that 5-HTP provides promising support for emotional well-being and additional studies indicate similar potential for support. It has also been shown to help moderate appetite and food cravings in study participants. In several other trials, including one that involved over 100 subjects, it has demonstrated the ability to promote healthy cranial vessel comfort and function. 5-HTP is derived from the Griffonia Simplicifolia and the hypo-allergenic plant fiber is derived from pine cellulose.
Each vegetarian capsule contains:
- 5-hydroxytryptophan (Griffonia simplicifolia) (100 mg)
(hypo-allergenic plant fiber added to complete capsule volume requirement)
50-300 mg per day, in divided doses, before meals. 1–3 capsules per day, in divided doses, before meals.
Not to be taken by pregnant or lactating women. 5-HTP may cause gastrointestinal upset in sensitive individuals. Do not use concurrently with SSRI medications or MAO inhibitors.
Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are taking carbidopa or drugs/supplements with serotonergic activity. These may include, but are not limited to, L-tryptophan, S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), St. John's wort, antidepressants, pain killers, over the counter cough and cold medication containing dextromethorphan, anti-nausea medication and anti-migraine medication. Discontinue use and consult a health care practitioner if you show signs of weakness, oral ulcers, or abdominal pain accompanied by severe muscle pain or if you experience skin changes.Sleep Aid: Consult a health care practitioner if sleeplessness persists continuously for more than 3 weeks (chronic insomnia). Do not use if you have scleroderma. Some people may experience drowsiness. Exercise caution if operating heavy machinery, driving a motor verhicle or involved in activities requiring mental alertness. Some people may experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
