Alpha lipoic acid is a metabolic antioxidant. Its metabolic functions provide energy to cells and power to the body. Its antioxidant functions protect the body from the damaging free radicals that lead to aging and numerous disease states. This is NOW®’s highest potency alpha lipoic acid supplement.
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is naturally produced in the body and may protect against cell damage in a variety of conditions. Some food sources are rich in alpha lipoic acid, such as spinach, broccoli, and yeast. ALA exists as two different enantiomers; the biologically active (R)-isomer and the (S)-isomer, found primarily in synthesized ALA supplements. NOW® ALA is a blend of these two isomers. Alpha lipoic acid and the metabolite, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), have antioxidant activity and can scavenge free radicals both intra- and extra-cellularly. Alpha lipoic acid is both water and fat soluble and can regenerate endogenous antioxidants, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, and glutathione to prevent oxidative damage. This is why it is often referred to as the “universal antioxidant”. This formulation also contains grape seed and black pepper extracts to provide synergism and additional antioxidant protection. Product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Directions
Adult Dosage: Take 1 capsule daily with meals.

Consult with a health care practitioner prior to use if currently taking any oral prescription medications or have diabetes or thyroid disorder. Discontinue use if skin rash or allergic reaction occurs. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Grape anthocyanins might inhibit the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Avoid use with Lactobacillus acidophilus. Orally, skin rash has been reported after use of alpha-lipoic acid. Adverse effects are more common in patients receiving high intravenous dose.

Theoretically, concurrent administration might prevent Lactobacillus acidophillus colonization of the gastrointestinal tract; avoid concurrent use.
