How it works

Magnesium plays an important role in the central nervous system, regulating neurotransmitter metabolism and modulating the sensitivity of nerve receptors, including those involved in the “fight or flight” stress response. In addition to dampening the stress response in the brain, magnesium exerts an anti-stress effect on cells throughout the body. Healthy cells usually contain twice as much magnesium as calcium, but when stress triggers the release of adrenaline and/or cortisol it leads to an influx of calcium, which can disrupt the normal magnesium/calcium balance. If magnesium levels are low to begin with, the effects of stress hormones on individual cells are amplified.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the body, making adequate magnesium intake essential for health and vitality. Magnesium reduces stress and anxiety; relaxes the muscles and calms the nerves; regulates the absorption and utilization of calcium; supports bone matrix formation and maintenance; reduces the risk of calcium deposits; regulates nerve cell conduction; supports cellular energy production; improves exercise endurance; and supports a healthy heart.

The citrate form of magnesium is well tolerated and highly bioavailable. Research shows that taking magnesium citrate can quickly restore healthy levels of magnesium, relieve anxiety and other symptoms associated with low magnesium status, and promote a healthy cardiovascular system.

Suggested Use

Magnesium is an essential nutrient needed for over 300 biochemical processes involving the muscles, nerves, and bones. Magnesium is also essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein, and fat to release energy from food. Many researchers recommend that we get just as much magnesium each day as we do calcium. Although bones contain twice as much calcium as magnesium, within cells the level of magnesium is more than double the level of calcium.

Magnesium deficiency is considered widespread in North America, and a lack of magnesium is associated with higher levels of irritability, insomnia, fatigue, cramps, migraine headaches, constipation, and osteoporosis. Magnesium is vital for the health of the brain, and low magnesium levels are also associated with poor sleep quality, irritability, and increased feelings of stress.

Diets high in processed foods often lack magnesium, but even a healthy diet can leave people deficient in magnesium due to the depletion of magnesium from the soil; excess dietary calcium; medications that affect mineral absorption and elimination; and low stomach acid, which compromises the absorption of non-citrate forms of magnesium.

Natural Factors Stress-Relax Magnesium Citrate powder is an easily absorbable, delicious drink mix available in tropical fruit and berry flavours.
