Anise is one of the oldest spices consumed. It was cultivated in ancient Egypt. The Romans used it to flavor cakes. Pythagoras evoked the scent of seeds. It is now cultivated mainly in India.

Anise is said to have benefits such as aiding digestion. It is antispasmodic, it would be expectorant therefore would treat coughs and respiratory problems and it would be carminative (it would help eliminate gas in the intestines). Anise being galactogenic, it would promote the formation of breast milk for women who breastfeed her child.


Suggested Use

We find green anise in vegetable dishes, curries and lentils. To make a herbal tea, simply put ½ teaspoon of crushed seeds in a cup of water and let stand for about ten minutes.
